Trauma-Informed Massage is a two-day, 12-hour live course and 6-hour online course in which students will learn what trauma-informed care means and how to implement the principles into their massage practice. Tiffany Diaz is a psychiatric nurse practitioner currently providing care in an outpatient clinic and has 26+ years of practicing and teaching massage. Topics covered in training include exploring the definition of PTSD, recognizing trauma responses during massage sessions, identifying medications prescribed to people with trauma, networking with mental health professionals, and learning practical techniques to facilitate the down-regulation of trauma in massage clients.
Practical skills, including how to teach clients box breathing and body awareness, will be demonstrated and practiced during class time. Students will be given a workbook with materials for future reference, such as common self-assessment tools used by mental health professionals, an example of a release of information form and instruction on how to use them, space to take notes during class, and a list of references for further education on the topic.
Plenty of time will be given for students to ask questions and discuss case scenarios. Class size will be limited to 4 students (we will pair into groups of 2) to give plenty of attention to students practicing hands-on skills. Students must bring one fitted sheet and two pillows to use while on the table during practicum. Please wear comfortable clothing and dress in layers for variable room temperatures. Students will not need to undress during class; no oils or lubricants will be used.
Day one class times are 12 pm – 6 pm and on Day two, 9 am – 3 pm – Students, please bring snacks and drinks for both days; there will be no lunch break on day one; please bring your lunch on day two we will have a “working” lunch break.
