Trauma-Informed Massage is a two-day, 12-hour live course + 6 hours online in which students will gain an overview of what trauma-informed care means and how to implement the principles into their massage practice. Tiffany Diaz is a psychiatric nurse practitioner who is currently providing care in an outpatient clinic and also has 26+ years of practicing and teaching massage. Topics covered in training include exploring the definition of PTSD, how to recognize trauma responses during massage sessions, identifying medications prescribed to people with trauma, and how to network with mental health professionals.
Practical skills, including how to teach clients box breathing and body awareness, will be demonstrated and practiced during class time. Students will be given a workbook with materials for future reference, such as common self-assessment tools used by mental health professionals, an example of a release of information form and instruction on how to use them, space to take notes during class, and a list of references for further education on the topic.
Plenty of time will be given for students to ask questions and discuss case scenarios. This class will prepare the student who may be considering further certification in trauma-informed care. Class size will be limited to 10 students (we will pair into groups of 2) to allow plenty of attention to be given to students who are practicing hands-on skills. Students will need to bring one portable table, a fitted sheet, and 2 pillows to use while on the table during practicum. Please wear comfortable clothing and dress in layers to allow for variable room temperatures. Students will not need to undress during class, and no oils or lubricants will be used.
Day one class times are 9 am-5 pm and on Day two, 9 am-4 pm, with a one-hour break for lunch both days, students, please bring your lunch to class. A refrigerator will be available to store drinks and filtered water for refilling hydration containers. A Keurig is on-site for your coffee needs; bring your own pod and fixings if you are particular about those things!
I have been teaching massage courses for more than a decade in Arkansas, and my goal is to provide students with an outstanding learning experience. I plan to begin teaching this course at my newly built barndominium located in Alma, Arkansas. I look forward to sharing this knowledge with my fellow bodyworkers in the hopes that more collaborative opportunities will emerge from the instruction.
