Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing event that causes physical and psychological harm. This trauma can take the form of an injury, illness, assault, abuse or any other event that results in significant pain and distress.

The effects of trauma can range from mild to severe. Some people who experience trauma may not know they have been affected by it until years later. Others may experience more significant symptoms right away.

There are four main components of a trauma-informed massage: establishing safety, creating a body map, working with the client’s history of traumatic events and building on their strengths.

In this course, we’ll cover what trauma is, how trauma is processed by the brain, how it’s treated, and how to give a trauma-informed massage.
